Waste Cannot Be Ignored, Yet Waste Pickers Are….

SEWA undertook a socio-economic study of waste recyclers in five cities namely Raebareli (Uttar Pradesh), Bikaner (Rajasthan), Bhagalpur (Bihar), Ranchi (Jharkhand) and Hyderabad (Telangana) in India. It covered 743 waste recyclers and examined key aspects of their lives and work including insecure livelihoods, lack of occupational health and safety and limited access to social security. The study provides important evidence to strengthen SEWA’s organising efforts and advocate for the recognition, rights and inclusion of waste recyclers in formal waste management systems.
