SEWA's Affiliations

SEWA is a national trade union of poor women workers from the informal economy. It has a rich experience of organizing poor women workers from the informal economy for increased collective bargaining strength and successfully bringing them voice, visibility and validity as workers.

Therefore, with the objective of influencing the decision makers worldwide and thus improve its members’ living and working standards by joining the ranks of an international union and to convince trade unions worldwide that informal workers, men and women alike, must be incorporated into the trade unions, SEWA has forged affiliations with various Global Unions and Federations.

Recognizing the SEWA’s experience organizing the women workers from the informal economy, it has been invited / elected in noteworty positions in several bodies at National and International level. On these lines, some of SEWA’s affiliations and the positions held in these, are as listed below:

  • International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) – Elected Vice President, Council Members
  • International Trade Union Confederation – Asia Pacific (ITUC AP) – Council Member
  • International Union of Food, Agriculture, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and allied Workers (IUF) – Executive Member
  • Homenet International – Vice President
  • IndustriAll – Member
  • StreetNet International, Secretary
  • Building and Woodworkers International (BWI) – Member
  • Asia Farmers Association – Member

These affiliations and representations have facilitated SEWA to share the issues and experiences of its members at various platforms. This has further lead towards the recognition of women as workers and taking forward the voices of the poor women of the informal economy workers.
