Campaign
for Recognition of Midwives

In
both urban and rural areas, from fifty to more than eighty percent
of child births are taken care of by local midwives calleddayans.
They are also active in providing ante and post natal care,
new born care, advice and treatment on reproductive health including
contraception. They also provide general primary health care
in the villages. And yet their life-saving contribution is not
recognised and they are not part of the mainstram health services.
SEWA has been organising dayans for their visibility and linkage
to the health care system.
In
October 1998 the Gujarat Government adopted the policy of officially
recognising the states midwives by providing them with
identity cards. Gujarat has become the first state in India
to recognise dayans in this way.
