The economic organisations described above are all primary organisations, serving the self-employed women directly. However, organising at the primary or grass roots level is necessary, but not enough. Access to markets, to training, to technical inputs and to policy making, requires organisations which can deal at state, national and international levels. The primary purpose of these organisations is to link the self employed women, through their primary organisations, to the larger economic structures; and in doing so, to mainstream them into the economy.

These federations are of different types, with different purposes, depending on the need of the primary organisations. Some serve a specific type of need such as housing, while others serve a multiplicity of needs. However, the main aim of all the federations is to federations is to mainstream the self-employed women.

	Gujarat State Mahila SEWA Cooperative Federation
	Kheda District Women's Savings and Credit Association
	306 savings and credit groups with 10,027 village members and 6 DWCRA groups for nursery raising and seed collection constitute this association in Kheda district. Since July 1999, the association has also been running an insurance programme reaching to more than 7,000 women of the district.
	Ahmedabad District Women's Savings and Credit Association
	274 savings and credit groups and 40 dairy cooperatives constitute this association. Health care and insurance services are provided to association members by Lok Swasthya SEWA Health Workers' Cooperative in this district.
	Gandhinagar District Women's Savings and Credit Association
	98 savings and credit groups, milk cooperatives and a paper-pickers' cooperative are working together in this district association. A midwives' cooperative, Shri Krishna Dayan Mandli, provides Health and lnsurance services to women of this district association.
	Ahmedabad District Vegetable Growers and Sellers Association
	This district-level organisation is supplying fresh vegetables from Ahmedabad district's villages to Shop.No. 40, the combined growers and sellers wholesale vegetable outlet run by the Gujarat State Women's Cooperative Federation.
	Sukhi Mahila Mandal
	Sabarkantha Kheda Mandal
	Surendranagar District Women and Child Development Mandal
	This local organisation began with providing childcare to its members, predominantly salt workers. However, today 52 savings groups have been formed as part of the mandal's activities. It has also begun providing other social security services such as health care and insurance.
