SEWA received the MacArthur Award for "Creative and Effective Institutions" on June 11th 2009 in Chicago. A total of eight organisations, 5 of which were from outside the U.S. (Russia, Nigeria, Caribbean and India) obtained this award for "the work of creative and effective institutions that take on persistent problems with fresh ideas and practical solutions", in the words of Mr. Jonathan Fanton, President of the Foundation.
The award will enable SEWA to scale up its health and insurance activities in Gujarat and other states, thereby offering more social protection for workers of the informal economy. |
